Orthodontics

If you’re unfamiliar with the word ‘orthodontics’ you’ll certainly know ‘brace’, just one of the orthodontic tools that can give you a smile to be proud of.

Why do I need orthodontics?

When teeth develop, they don’t always develop in the uniform way you might hope or expect. Sometimes they emerge crooked. Sometimes they protrude or are ‘crowded’ out by the rest of your teeth. And sometimes they overlap one another.

For some people, crooked teeth can damage self-confidence. For others, the irregular position of teeth can make it more difficult to clean them properly – and that can increase the risk of tooth decay and associated problems.

Orthodontics is the term given to the various tools used to gradually adjust the position of your teeth, reshaping them so your health and your confidence benefit.

What might my orthodontic treatment include?

There are lots of different ways your smile can be adjusted. The right method for you depends on the specific issues that affect your teeth. It could be a matter of removing a tooth or two to give the rest of your teeth room. We carry out orthodontic removals at our Bristol dental surgery. If you need braces or similar, we’ll refer you to a specialist orthodontist.

How long will I have to wear my orthodontics?

It varies from person to person depending on the degree of reshaping required, but most people wear orthodontics for between 18 and 24 months.
